What are The Benefits of JA8 Lighting?

August 13, 2021

There are many benefits to using JA8 lighting regardless of which state you are in!  Remember that JA8 was the name given to the 2016 revision of the California Title 24 Regulations.  JA8 is an abbreviation for “Joint Appendix 8”, these regulations cover both indoor and outdoor lighting in new construction, renovations, and any additions to both residential and non-residential buildings.  Before we get into the benefits, take a look below at the main qualification requirements in order to be JA8 compliant:

Appendix JA8: Qualification Requirements for High Efficacy Light Sources – Partial List

Specifications
Requirements
Initial Efficacy ≥ 45 lumens per watt

Power Factor at Full Rated Power ≥ 0.90
Correlated Color Temperature (CCT) For inseparable SSL luminaires, LED light engines and GU24 LED lamps, ≤ 4000 Kelvin.
For all other sources, ≤ 3000 Kelvin.
Color Rendering Index (CRI) ≥ 90
R9 ≥ 50
Rated Life ≥ 15,000 Hours
Minimum Dimming Level ≤ 10%
Flicker < 30% for frequencies of 200Hz or below at 100% and 20% light output.

Most JA8 bulbs and fixtures are LED so many of the benefits of LEDs also apply to JA8 bulbs:

  • JA8 lighting is required to have above a 15,000-hour lifespan which will increase energy savings and help reduce maintenance and replacement costs.
  • Dimming also helps to extend the life span of a bulb. The light output of JA8 fixtures can be dimmed down when paired with compatible dimmers and dimmable bulbs.
  • All JA8 light sources are required to emit a color rendering index (CRI) of 90 or higher. CRI simply measures how well a light source can accurately display colors. These high CRI bulbs are frequently used to showcase decor, artwork, and merchandise displays. Incandescent bulbs are known to have a CRI of 100 which makes colors appear brighter and more vivid; LED technology has been innovating to get as close to the standard as possible, so with a JA8 certified bulb you can be sure you are getting a top market product.
  • Depending on where you live, some JA8 certified products may qualify for rebates, these can come from local utility companies or through your state. Keep in mind, states have been known to adopt California’s energy regulations within a few years of it going into effect, so your state may be requiring JA8 lighting in the future.

All these benefits make it clear to see why you should incorporate JA8 lighting in your home or business.  Visit our catalog and make the switch today!
