First produced in 2013, LED filament bulbs come with advantages other than their unique old-fashioned appearance. By utilizing high efficiency LEDs, the LED filament bulbs are able to produce a brighter light than traditional filament bulbs and, thanks to technology, can also be dimmed to match your desired atmosphere. They fit in almost any lighting luminaries which allows for a greater variety of creativity and design.
What is LED Filament Bulb and what are they made of?
An LED filament light bulb is an LED that is designed to imitate a traditional incandescent light bulb but utilizes high efficiency LEDs. The bulb boasts a wide-angle light distribution, typically 300° and can be even more effective than many other LED bulbs. They are made up of 5 main components: Glass shade, LED filaments, Gas, LED Driver, and Lamp Socket.
Glass Shade – The most typical feature of any LED bulb, can come in a variety of shapes and sizes to fit your ideas.
LED Filaments – The filaments closely resemble a traditional filament appearance, but they are in fact significantly different. LED filaments are made up of a substrate, LED chips, and phosphor. The type of substrate used can affect the heat and light conduction. The light output and decay are dependent on the quality, quantity, and size of the LED chips used in the filament. Finally, the phosphor dictates the color emitted by the bulb.
Gas – Mostly helium and nitrogen are filled in empty glass shades for the main purpose of increasing lifespan, you should note that some manufacturers will omit this process or use small amounts of gas to save on cost and can affect the lifespan of the bulb.
LED Driver – An LED driver does exactly what it sounds like…it “drives” power to the LEDs. The Led driver is not only used to manage the electrical current, but also serves as a protective buffer.
Lamp Base Socket – The base of the bulb, typically nickel-plated brass or aluminum nickel plating that dictates what type of lamp base the bulb is compatible with.
LED filament bulbs are an effective way to utilize new school technology with old fashion design to create a long-lasting retro vibe for your space. Utilizing the quality, lifespan, and flexibility of LED engineering, LED filament bulbs bring an efficient, yet unique design to any setting.
